Seagate 1TB Expansion External Hard Drive Model ST1000LM035 Not Mounting

Seagate 1TB Expansion External drive that is not mounting

This not mounting Seagate ST1000LM035 model drive came from a 1TB Seagate Expansion external hard drive. The reported issue from the repair shop in Wichita was that the drive sounded healthy, but the computer would not recognize it. The drive would not show up on any computer it was connected to. In this case, the problem was a firmware issue causing the behavior and I was able to get 100% of the data back, but these drives are particularly prone to failure and I wanted to discuss that a little more today. Rosewood Drives This model drive is a very popular model and is part of the Rosewood family of drives that Seagate started producing in 2016. Rosewood drives include models such as ST1000LM035, ST1000LM048, ST2000LM007, and ST1000LX015. These models are used in multiple external enclosures including drives by Maxtor, Lacie, and Seagate. Many of the Rugged Mini drives from Lacie actually have these Rosewood series drives inside. While the specs on these drives look good on paper, they seem to be very prone to … Read more

Important Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB MQ01UBD100 Not Showing Up

Toshiba 1TB Canvio Basics drive that is not showing up

A gentleman called me from here in Hutch with an external Toshiba Canvio Basics external hard drive that was not showing up on his computer and needed to be recovered. He had initially bought it to a local computer repair shop, which had verified that it was the drive itself that was having an issue. The repair shop had recommended contacting us as an affordable data recovery option. The data on the drive included the only copy of baby pictures, so it was very important to get the data off the drive and backed up! After the client discussed options with his wife, they decided to have me work on the project and arranged for a local pickup. Not Showing Up Canvio Basics Recovery When data recovery is needed, trusting the recovery technician you are giving the drive to is very important. If you are looking to pay for the data to be recovered, it is almost always because the data itself has value. I have a whole page here on the site dedicated to … Read more

Recovering Bad Sectors On Western Digital Hard Drive

2TB Western Digital 3.5 inch drive

This hard drive with bad sectors came from a local neighbor here in Hutchinson, Kansas.  The customer reported that certain folders could not be accessed. They said if the folders were accessible (which was rare), then most of the files inside the folders would not open. They had tried many times to get the important data off the drive but were never able to get any of the data to transfer off the drive. The data was important enough to warrant data recovery, and no backup was available with the data on it. The most important type of data reported was photos, with the pictures that were inside the folders that would not respond as the most important of all. Western Digital Hard Drive Recovery The reported symptoms (certain folders and data not accessible) could be caused by corruption, an operating system issue on the computer, a permissions issue, an issue with the drive itself, or some kind of malware. It is unlikely for this type of issue to be heads or other issues requiring … Read more

Western Digital My Passport Not Showing Up On Computer

Drive from Western Digital My Passport

A computer repair shop in Wichita had a client come in with a Western Digital My Passport drive that was not showing up on their computer anymore that ended up having stuck heads. When it was plugged into a computer, it would not mount and the computer would not even recognize the drive at all. They said if you listened carefully to the drive you could hear that it was not spinning up as it should, it was actually completely silent. The computer repair shop attempted to mount the drive on their shop computers to recover data, but the drive continued to light up but not show up on any machine. The data recovery software the repair shop tried also would not recognize the drive so they were not able to perform any recovery to get back the lost data. The repair shop has sent quite a few of their clients to me over the years, as they know I can offer an affordable data recovery solution, so they recommended the client bring their drive … Read more

Important Seagate Hard Drive Making Beeping Sound

Seagate Momentus Thin 500GB Laptop Drive

I received this 500GB Seagate Momentus Thin drive that was making a beeping sound from a shop via our mail-in recovery service. The customer had brought their laptop in because it has stopped working, and the shop had removed the drive and found it was making a beeping noise instead of working normally. Beeping sound coming from Seagate The shop did try to get the drive to work by plugging it into a few different computers and seeing if their recovery software would recognize the drive. While this particular repair shop offers general computer repair and a little data recovery, they do not offer clean room data recovery. They suspected that this Seagate making a beeping sound likely would end up needing a clean room to complete the recovery project. This shop sends drives to us to complete affordable clean room recoveries for them, and we are pleased to help! We have a few programs available for shops that are looking to use us as their data recovery partner. Heads stuck on platter issue This … Read more

Recovering a Samsung ST1000LM024 with Bad Sectors

1TB Samsung ST1000LM024 Laptop Drive

I received a call regarding a Samsung ST1000LM024 hard drive with bad sectors that needed to be recovered while at the Kansas State Fair with my boys (enjoying some D&J Pronto Pup). It was a referral from a local computer repair shop for a drive that they were not able to access the data. The drive belonged to a small business that does carpet cleaning, so they needed it recovered to get their business data back as quickly as possible. The repair shop had attempted a recovery using software based methods but was not successful in getting any usable data from the drive. The shop recommended my services as an affordable alternative to the expensive data recovery service they were quoted by another larger data recovery lab. Samsung ST1000LM024 Recovery The Samsung drive was a 1TB laptop drive with model number ST1000LM024. I was able to test the heads with the PC-3000 and they did test as good. Doing a random read test across the drive I found there were areas with bad sectors present. … Read more

Affordable Mac Pro Data Recovery ST3500641AS

Seagate ST3500641AS 500GB

Helping people get back their important data is one of the things I truly enjoy about Data Recovery. It is especially rewarding when you can help someone you know personally get back data that is important to their family. There is a local farm called Jako where my wife and I love to purchase items we don’t currently have the ability to produce ourselves (like raw cow’s milk). The family-run farm is a great example of what we love about our area here in Kansas.  I handed a business card over just in case they needed data recovery in the future. About a month later I got a call that their Mac Pro went down with some important excel sheets and they needed help getting the data back. Mac Pro Data Recovery Diagnosis The Mac Pro was one of the huge models with 4 drive bays of which all had hard drives installed. These towers weigh about 70 pounds fully loaded so they are quite a beast. The first step was to figure out which … Read more

Beeping Samsung ST1000LM024 Drive Recovered

Top of Samsung Laptop Drive

This beeping Samsung hard drive came from a photographer’s laptop that was used to store professional photos. A shop in McPherson said the client brought the computer in with the issue description of not booting with a slight beeping sound. The shop found that the computer was not recognizing the internal drive, and they could hear a slight beep from where the hard drive was connected. Beeping Samsung Recovery Project The repair shop referred the customer to us so we could get the data off the beeping internal drive at an affordable price. We have done a few recoveries for this shop and another of them was for a beeping drive! So they knew we were a good fit for the job. I drove over to Inman to pick up the drive and, as soon as I got back, opened it in the clean room to do a visual inspection. My hunch was proved correct; the heads were stuck on the platter. Toshiba Recovered After Different Recovery Shop Failed

Toshiba Laptop Drive

This was a mail-in recovery that we received after another recovery shop failed to recover the needed data. The previous recovery company said they were not able to get anything from the drive and gave it back to the client. The client in this case was a computer repair shop that had heard about us and decided to give us a try! The repair shop mentioned our affordable quote for lab recovery was way less than half of what the other shop had quoted for the recovery. MQ01ABF050 Toshiba Recovery The hard drive came in as spinning normally but not being recognized on a computer. Connected to the PC-3000, it initialized properly and gave the correct drive ID. Doing a heads test showed that there was a weak head that was causing access to the data to be extremely slow or even not possible for some of the drive. Swapping the bad head I recommended to the customer that we complete a head swap to get a set of working heads in the drive, then … Read more

Seagate 2TB Mobile Drive ST2000LM007 Recovered After Head Swap

ST2000LM007 2TB Drive

Update Nov 2021 – This particular model, ST2000LM007, is part of the Rosewood family which I have a more in-depth blog post about titled Seagate 1TB Expansion External Hard Drive Model ST1000LM035 Not Mounting. This Seagate Rosewood model ST2000LM007 drive came in as a referral from a local computer repair shop. The repair shop had tried to recover the drive with software based recovery methods, but could not get their computers to recognize the drive at all. The repair shop recommended their customer contact us for an affordable clean room data recovery service. Rosewood head swap recovery Once I received the drive I started the diagnosis process. A visual inspection in the clean room environment showed platter damage so I let the customer know it was unlikely to be recovered, unfortunately. There was visible damage to the top platter from a failed head and there was a good chance if I completed a head swap there would still be no data recovered from this drive as some firmware modules may be inaccessible due to damage. … Read more
